I don’t really think there is much you could do about it. Sounds like whatever finish is on the wood, or the texture of the wood itself, is just prone to visible marks.
Get yourself a microfibre mop and just take a quick sweep over the dirty spots each day, with just plain water (I also have hardwood and find it’s the best thing to maintain your finish and leave the floors shiny and film-free).
Maybe your dogs would tolerate socks while in the house? Might be worth a try….
