Is it ok to put new hardwood flooring over existing flooring?

We are working on an older house and some of the floor have spaces missing(we took out some walls) So we are putting in new hardwood floors. The floors now are some hardwood some other things. Can we put the new hardwood over the existing floors? Is this a good idea? Other choice is tearing all the floors out, but we would like to avoid that.

remember to use a damp proof membrane if you do to avoid your new floor from warping due to condesation/rising damp etc.
